Research on Magazine front covers

From my research on magazine front covers such as 'Film' I have found codes and conventions that are followed throughout magazines which I will include in my magazine front cover. The layout of the magazine involves the title to be at the top of the page and centered. The title is also always in the same font and colour so the audience can recognise the franchise, and are also in brightly lit and bold colours. From studying the film magazine named 'Film' I have found that it always includes the main character from a new blockbuster film, therefore I will put the main character of my trailer centered on the front cover to follow codes and conventions. Text on the magazine front cover is also always in dark colours such as black, red and blue. Therefore I have decided to focus on black and red for my colour panel to promote my film trailer through the magazine. Secondary features, such as the content inside the magazine, is also always found around the main image, using the same colour panel. Through my research I found that 'Film' magazine also includes pugs, which I will try to include in my film magazine through using photoshop.

Casting

For our piece we have decided to use a young, blonde actress. We feel that this best compliments our piece as it sticks to the conventions of using a young girl to reflect the vulnerability and helplessness of the victim. The girl we have decided to use achieved a B at GCSE drama and continues to study it into A2.

For the unknown character we will use a large male dressed completely in black which hides their identity and adds to the suspense.

Script for Film Trailer: Condemned

We have decided for our film trailer to have the best possible effect on the audience not to have any dialogue in our trailer as there will be lots of fast cuts of shots. However we will be including diagetic sounds such as a womens scream, noise of a train passing or bus, and footsteps. We may decide later on to add a voiceover to our trailer.

Target Audience for Film Trailer

Our target audience for our trailer and poster range from the ages 18-30. We feel this because a younger audience would be negatively affected by the content, styles and the way the project is edited. Also this trailer has the potential to become extremely graphic and we therefore did not feel this would be appropriate. Between the ages of 18-30 is the time when most couples form or date. A horror/thriller film is known to be an ice breaker and the male enjoys feeling protective over his female partner as it highlights his masculinity.
Although our film is classified as a horror, it contains a thriller element to which women enjoy more and therefore is attractive to both genders. This makes our trailer more universal as limited blood and gore attracts a wider audience.
The advantage of having one specific audience is that the styles, techniques and editing used only needs to be considered for one particular audience so we don't have to worry about appealing to a wider audience or offending anyone as rating gives us more freedom to experiment without having to worry.
From looking at other film trailers such as 'The Omen' and 'Creep' we have found out that the horror genre targets young people especially. Due to the BBFC's classification of 18 for most horror or thriller films, we based our trailers content on this information, therefore the target audience for our trailer is fore people aged 18 and over. From our research we have found that 'The Last Girl' is a key element in a horror film and is used traditionally in every horror film. The actress playing this character is usually attractive, therefore appealing to a young male audience. Therefore in our trailer we are using a young attractive female in order to attract a traditional horror audience, however we have challenged codes and conventions of the horror genre as we will not use the young attractive girl as a victim of a male killer.
Research from 'The Creep' trailer has shown us that horror movies aim mostly for a male audience as they are more exposed to blood and gore through the media such as video games and other horror films, whereas traditionally a female audience prefer a more relaxed film, such as a Rom-com, however some females do enjoy horror films.

Poster Design

ASIAN_HORROR_POSTERS_1

For our poster we had an idea that we'd like a close up of the female victim being under threat. From this the main character is clearly established and an enigma has been set for the film which draws the audience in to wondering why and how this has happened. The main character for our piece will be a pretty, pale blonde young girl, this then emphasises her weakness and vulnerability, also more sympathy will be created for her. The poster above is our inspiration for our piece and will have a similar layout as we feel this is most effective at grabbing attention and interest.

OUR POSTER
-Black background
-Strong title - 'blurry/ faded'
-Main character in middle - scared
-Theatrical make-up used to show suffering/torture
-Mysterious dark figure in background
-Credits at bottom -previous works
-Quote from a film magazine or critic
-Star rating
-Film's website

Audience Feedback

Feedback to our idea for our trailer, was positive and everyone who helped us carried out our research gave us good feedback to our ideas. From our audience expectation questionnaire, we found that the name 'Desolate' meaning isolated and alone was the best suited for our film trailer as it highlighted the horror/thriller genre, therefore we incorporated this into our trailer. We also wanted the audience to feel a sense of isolation, so this title was the best option to fit into the mood of our trailer. Also from our audience feedback, we also found that it is the most effective option to keep most of the narrative under wraps from the audience, and not give too much away, as creating enigmas encourages and audience to come and view your film, and also creates discussion among an audience.
For the third question, we found that the majority of the audience selected 'The Last Girl' and an isolated setting to define the horror/thriller piece, which is the best choice for our trailer as I said earlier that the theme we want to circulate is isolation, so this is something we will definitely include in our trailer. The location of our trailer due to the results we have found will be in an isolated setting such as a graveyard as it creates a sense of loneliness and sets the mood for the audience. It is also a key element in defining the genre. However, although we have featured a girl in our trailer, it is not clear whether we use the girl as a victim of a male villain, as this is the traditional set up of a horror film as we have found through our research. Therefore in this question, we have decided to challenge codes and conventions of the horror genre, as we will not include typical characters in our trailer.
For the question 'What should our film trailer include?' half the audience have suggested blood and gore, whilst the other half suggested disturbing images as they can both create an effect on an audience. From this information, we decided that disturbing images could be more effective as we plan to have lots of quick cuts of different shots of the protagonist in different positions and different situations, which builds up the pace and could make the audience feel uncomfortable and disturbed.

Audience Expectation Questionaire

Audience Expectation Questionnaire

In order to collect results from our questionnaire we posted it on facebook and collected people’s answers. However, due to facebook users being mainly young adults are results aren't completely reliable as they are age bias, although they are of the target audience's age and therefore are still valid.
